World Read Aloud Day is celebrated on the first Wednesday in February. This year, that happens to be 7 February.

This day is not only dedicated to reading, but to the art and practice of reading aloud.

It helps to motivate children, teens and adults to celebrate the power of words and also shows that the right to read and write belongs to all people.

Reading aloud is an instructional practice through which teachers, parents and caregivers read texts aloud to children.

The reader incorporates variations in pitch, tone, pace, volume, pauses, eye contact, questions and comments to produce a fluent and enjoyable delivery, according to readingrockets.org.

  • Nal’ibali, a South African reading-for-enjoyment campaign with the aim of sparking children’s potential through storytelling and reading, also celebrates this day.

A story, “The Lost Kitten” by Stacey Fru, was specially written for this day.

Join Nal’ibali’s pledge to read aloud to a child or a group of children.
