With the launch of the first Cyberlab in the Northern Cape, learners in the province will be able to learn through interactive screens and virtual reality.
The MEC for Education, Zolile Monakali, opened the first of ten such facilities in the province at the Kimberley Technical High School (THS) on Wednesday, 9 February.
According to Monakali, Cyberlabs house four zones representing the province’s economic drivers: mining, agriculture, astronomy and solar energy.
Learners will be able to navigate various dimensions of each of these zones via multi-touch, high-resolution screens; 3D animations; virtual tours; interactive content; and simulations.
As the software in these labs are equipped to operate offline, teachers and learners will have access to all electronic learning material without any data or internet access requirements.
Along with the technology, the labs also provide carefully designed study material. The labs offer Mathematics and Science content that has been specifically developed for the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement. In addition, the education system across the country is preparing for the implementation of the curriculum for Coding and Robotics.
Monakali thanked the Gamagara Development Trust and Edukite for realising this dream. He said the labour market increasingly speaks to a technology-driven economy which requires proficiency in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics and Digital Literacy.
According to Moira Marais, head of the department, these Cyberlabs are state-of-the-art, multi-purpose centres geared to improve learners’ skills through play-based practical experiences in a controlled environment.
E-learning allows learners to get faster access to information everywhere, anytime. It also enables them to cross demographic limits.
Apart from the one at the Kimberley THS, Cyberlabs are also available at:
- the Saul Damon High School (Upington);
- the Namakwaland High School (Springbok);
- the Itlotleng High School (Bendel);
- the Galaletsang High School (Kuruman);
- the Kuilsville High School (Daniëlskuil);
- the Pitso Jantjie High School (Manyeding);
