After information of an alleged consignment of drugs enroute to Upington was received, two persons were arrested on Sunday, 26 May, with drugs worth more than R2 million in their possession.
Sgt Omphile Masegela, police spokesperson in the ZF Mgcawu District, said after the information was operationalised, a silver Hyundai Sonata sedan was stopped on the N10 road outside Upington.
The vehicle was searched and 9 315 Mandrax tablets with an estimated valued of R930 150; 2,012 kg of Tik with an estimated value of R603 000; and 1,32 kg of crack cocaine with an estimated value of R554 000, were found stashed in the vehicle.
The members of the task team confiscated the drugs, the vehicle, and an undisclosed amount of cash and cell phones.
The man and woman in the vehicle – two Nigerian nationals aged 42 and 39 years old – were arrested for dealing in drugs and are expected to appear in court soon.
Members of the ZFM High-Way Patrol who were off-duty, Upington Border Police and Upington K9 unit were involved in this interception.
The provincial commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lt. Gen. Koliswa Otola, commended the members for going the extra mile in ensuring that drugs were removed from the streets and squeezing the space for drug dealers to operate.
