An armed robber was arrested near Taung in the North West Province after the swift response and exceptional collaboration between the police in the Northern Cape and North West, together with a private drone company.

This follows an incident on Tuesday, 15 October, at approximately 14:00 when five armed men reportedly robbed a tuck shop in Bonita Park in Hartswater in the Northern Cape, Col Cherelle Ehlers of the police’s media centre in the province stated.

A team comprising of members of the Hartswater K9 unit, Pampierstad Visible Policing and detectives, as well as members of the police in Taung, were mobilised to operationalise information received that the suspects allegedly fled in a red Toyota Corolla in the direction of Taung.

With the assistance of a drone search, one of the suspects, aged 42 years old, was found hiding in the bush and was arrested at approximately 18:00.

The search team, assisted by the Airwing of the police in the Northern Cape, is continuing with a search for four suspects who are still at large.

The police are investigating cases of business robbery, malicious damage to property, and attempted murder, Ehlers said.

The police commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lt. Gen. Koliswa Otola, commended the inter-provincial collaboration together with the community, which led to the arrest of the suspect.
