The Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services (JICS) confirmed on Monday (07/03) that its officials had launched an independent investigation into an incident at the Tswelopele Correctional Centre in Kimberley.

According to the Department of Correctional Services (DCS), two inmates died and a third is being treated in hospital after three inmates were apparently involved in an attack on a correctional services official. In an attempt to defuse the situation, a scuffle is said to have ensued.

The DCS stated the three inmates had suffered injuries. Two inmates later died.

The JICS said that it condemned violence of all kinds in correctional centres, and was concerned about the deaths. Emerantia Cupido, JICS spokesperson, said once the independent investigation was concluded, a report with recommendations would be compiled and forwarded to the DCS and the portfolio committee.
