Cyclists and businesses can support the development of children in the ZF Mgcawu District by joining Cycling for Early Childhood Development’s annual event on Friday, 16 December.

Starting in Prieska just after midnight, those taking part will hit the road via Marydale, Groblershoop, Grootdrink and Karos to Upington, covering a distance of 259 km.

Support will be available along the route and cyclers will try to reach Upington late morning in this initiative of the Impucuko Development and Foundation non-profit organisation.

Ivan Juries of the marketing office says the inaugural event took place in 2020, and for five consecutive years since then a similar event on the major routes leading to Upington will be hosted. In 2020 it commenced from the Molopo Lodge, in 2021 from Pofadder, next year from Postmasburg, and in 2024 Rietfontein will be the starting point.

Juries says support of Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres in the district is one of the event’s main aims. These centres in previously disadvantaged communities need assistance to register as an ECD centre, equipment, or training for teachers and assistants.

With the cycle events, the foundation raises funds for this cause and involves more roleplayers.

The foundation has more programmes in mind, such as providing and mentoring extreme sports programmes, including canoeing, river rafting, and mountain biking for high school learners.

This year’s target is to raise R200 000. For more information, dial 074-734-9856.
