The Warrenton Bowls Club is promoting the sport within the community of Magareng and aims to introduce it to local schools.
Local club coach, Jacques Swanepoel, believes lawn bowls is the perfect sport for those looking for a low impact sport for the whole family.
“We started 2022 with a few goals in mind,” Swanepoel says.
The first is to create heroes or role models for the community to look up to.
“This goal was reached when one of our players, Robben Chaamano, ended in the second stage of the 2022 Intervaal singles and was placed in third position. He will compete for the provincial title at the Northern Cape Bowls Top 16 singles in Kimberley on 12 and 13 February.”
The second goal is to establish a local schools programme to promote the sport to the U15 age group. This grassroots development could pay off, since a gap was identified in the junior provincial and national sides in this group. Support is needed to get equipment and to train teachers to help run the programme. The third goal is to upgrade and develop the facilities.
Swanepoel is confident that a future bowls super star could come from this club, and will keep working to find this hidden talent.
