Blood moon rising, photos by Albertus Horn

Albertus Horn, nature photographer living in the Gamagara river catchment area between Kuruman and Daniëlskuil in the Northern Cape, describes photographing the total lunar eclipse on Sunday, 7 September, as “an adventure and an unforgettable experience”. The eclipse transforms the moon into a dramatic “blood moon” across the country. Horn says it started off with the moon peeking over the mountains and a quick trip to another part of the Gamagara river. “There, I was met by mosquitoes, water and mud. For more than three hours, I enjoyed the total lunar eclipse along with the sound of frog calls echoing through the surrounding area.” He then made a composition of several photos, showing how the moon changed over the course of the eclipse.
