The Mayibuye Uprising Memorial Precinct in Galeshewe, Kimberley, recently was a hive of activity where hip hop, poetry, live music, DJs, art exhibitions, fashion and several food stalls kept visitors intrigued.

This took place on Human Rights Day on 21 March at the precinct, where the historic Robert Sobukwe office is situated.

The Human Rights Day Experience aimed to encourage youth participation and social cohesion in the arts and tourism sectors, said Joel Setlhabi, secretary of the Galeshewe Youth Network. This organisation, in partnership with the Teemaneng Arts and Tourism Organisation, hosted the event.

“This is to achieve our common goal of inspiring growth and development in the arts industry and, in doing so, creating a platform for local hip hop artists, poets, DJs and local exhibitors, promoting local products,” said Setlhabi, while commemorating Human Rights Day.

Local DJs, Lerato “DJ Crazy” Tafane and Agnes Didishe, also known as DJ Agxalso, kept visitors entertained.

The event was sponsored by the Northern Cape Arts and Culture Council.
