A former financial manager at the Northern Cape Cricket Union is out on R5 000 bail after he was arrested in December by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks).

Jean Pierre van Niekerk (25) made his second appearance on Friday, 19 January, before the Kimberley Serious Commercial Crime Court, said WO Nomthandazo Mnisi, Hawks spokesperson.

The accused first appeared on Thursday, 21 December 2023, after being arrested and he was charged with fraud, alternatively theft.

Between July 2022 and March 2023 Van Niekerk, who was employed by the Northern Cape Cricket Union as a financial manager, allegedly misappropriated funds belonging to the employer.

Payments that were due to service providers were deposited to his personal bank account. The entity suffered an actual loss exceeding R400 000 plus interest.

The accused is out on bail and the case is postponed to Thursday, 1 February.
