A hand and power tool safety awareness course was recently hosted at the Kathu High School.

The Saacosh Academy, a consulting, training and coaching company specialising in occupational health and safety, presented this session.

In general, people who use hand and power tools are exposed to the hazards of cutting or pinching; flying, abrasive and splashing objects; or harmful dust, fume, vapour or gas.

Through four interactive sessions, Gerrit Fyver of the Saacosh Academy demonstrated how to use hand and power tools safely.

The 146 technical learners of Gr. 10 to Gr. 12 had to complete a short assessment before receiving a certificate of attendance. This group of learners will soon form part of the technical workforce exposed to such dangers.

The Saacosh Academy thanked Fyver, who facilitated the course, as well as Linda Holm and Stephan van Tonder, principal and teacher of the Kathu High School.

Saacosh believes that education is power, and that learners should be equipped with the best possible knowledge and tools to become safe and responsible employees.
