A 69-year-old man from Boichoko, Postmasburg, was arrested on Friday morning (26/08) for allegedly selling drugs.

Police members followed up on information received and raided the man’s house. They found Mandrax tablets and drugs, as well as cash amounting to R7 150,40, believed to be the proceeds of the sale of the drugs. 

The acting station commander, Capt. Gerrit Mouton, commended members who followed up on the information.

The suspect will appear in the Postmasburg Magistrate Court on Monday (29/08), said WO Nomvuyo Makoloi, Corporate Communication.

  • During another operation on Thursday (25/08), police members arrested 85 undocumented persons in Kleinzee after pouncing on the suspects at the Springbok hostels, and also seized 400 bags of diamond-bearing gravel.

Lt. Col Sergio Kock, police spokesperson, said two male suspects with 12 uncut diamonds were also arrested. In the operation, while searching a garage, the police members also seized an abandoned CZ 380 pistol and ammunition. 

The operation was conducted by members of the Springbok Public Order Policing Unit, K9, Visible Policing Unit, Crime Intelligence, Immigration Services and members of the police in Kleinzee during operations Vhutha Hawe and Thata Zonke. 

All the suspects will be appearing in the Springbok Magistrates’ Court soon.

Col Schalk Andrews, the acting district commander of the Namakwa District, commended the members for clamping down on crime.

  • In an unrelated case, members of the police arrested a 28-year-old man on Wednesday (24/08) for being in possession of succulent plants worth more than R200 000. 

After receiving information, the police members raided the suspect’s premises on a plot at Kharkams in Kamieskroon and found 3000 succulent plants in his possession, as well as one live round of ammunition. 

Capt. Olebogeng Tawana, police spokesperson, said the multi-disciplinary intelligence operation was led by members of the Springbok K9 unit, Kamieskroon Visible Policing Unit and the Springbok Public Order Policing Unit. 

The suspect is expected to appear in the Kamieskroon Magistrate’s Court soon, on counts of dealing in endangered plants and unlawful possession of ammunition. 

Capt. Gert Coetzee, station commander of the Kamieskroon police station, said the police in the Namakwa District will continue to prevent criminals from stripping nature of these indigenous plants.
